Hilton Pond 04/22/01 (Ants & Aphids)

HI . . .

Aphids--tiny sap-sucking insects--are often tended by ants that make
use of the honeydew excreted by the aphids.

There are some neat digital photos of this phenomenon on the Web site
for Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History at
http://www.hiltonpond.org . Just click on "This Week at Hilton Pond,"
and select the week of 22-30 April 2001.

As always, there's a summary of the week's bird banding activities,
including recaptures of several species--even some rather old
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and Northern Cardinals!--as well as mug
shots of Carolina Chickadee, Gray Catbird, and Swamp Sparrow.

Happy Spring!
