Hello, this is a June 11 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO
PURPLE GALLINULE
MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD
DICKCISSEL
BRANT

A BLACK-WHISKERED VIREO was discovered on Bald Head Island (NC) on June 6 and
was seen again June 10. However, this bird was not seen in the PM of June 6
and was missed today June 11. The singing bird was along Bay Tree Trail close
to the "T" intersection with Stede Bonnett Trail. It has also been seen
further down Bay Tree near house # 17. There is no vehicle access to Bald
Head Island. Visitors must take the ferry over to the island, then rent a
golf cart or walk.

A PURPLE GALLINULE is being seen at Sunset Lakes near Sunset Beach, NC. Call
Mary McDavit at 910-579-2446 for latest details. This is the same location
where a male Cinnamon Teal spent most of the past winter.

Birders looking for the vireo and gallinule may want to try for a pair of
DICKCISSELS in the same area. From Southport, NC take hwy. 211 toward the
Southport/Fort Fisher ferry terminal. When 211 turns right to go to the
ferry, STAY STRAIGHT. Continue until the road ends at a chain-link fence and
gate. (This gate may be open during the week). Turn right onto Shepherd Rd.
and look for the Dickcissel(s) on the power lines or shrubs just a few
hundred yards down the road.

MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRDS have been reported from both Carolinas this week. In
SC, a bird was at Folly Beach; and in NC a bird was seen at Cape Lookout on
June 2.

A BRANT still lingers at the Salt Pond at Cape Hatteras Point in NC.

Thanks this week to Pat Moore, Mary McDavit, Greg Massey, John Fussell and
Chuck Saleeby for their calls and reports.
