Observed 4 young with tails 3/4 body length and 2 adults. Watched them
on fence near nesting tower from 7:30 until 8:30 tonight. During this
time we watched the male do 2 intercepts with the red-tailed hawk. He
landed on the back of the hawk after a little chase and the first time
he stayed on the back for 5 seconds with a few flaps of his wings. The
second time the ST landed on the back immediately and stayed with the
hawk for 7 seconds before the he broke off the intercept and returned to
the nesting tower where he could watch for the hawk while mother and 4
babies were still on the fence at the base of the tower. During the
second landing on the hawk the ST did not flap his wings at all . 7
seconds surfing the back of a mad red-tailed hawk is as good as it gets
if you'r a ST.
