I went yesterday with David Allen of the NC endangered
species program to the large mudflats near the south
end of Portsmoth Island. We saw 12 piping
plovers,probably a 100 black bellied plovers and
semipalmated plovers, afew dunlin, a black black tern
one spotted sandpiper!numerous semipalmated sanpipers
which he seems to be able to readily identify from
western sandpipers by their bills(I lack this
skill)but no sign of a curlew sandpiper which I
naively thought may have wandered further south!ceballenger,Trenton,NC
