savannah nwr 10/29/01

drove laurel hill trail
at savannah nwr around 12pm in search of waterfowl.
not much water,
though there was more towards the northeast/ northern boundary
of the driving trail (impoundment 16?).

as i headed south on hwy 17
towards savannah/port wentworth,
a northern harrier cruised the marsh.
green-winged & blue-winged teal took flight
on the north side of the road (right).
northern shoveler were mixed in.

two small gray shorebirds caught my eye.
crouching on the mud in a shallow pond,
i observed the birds with long thin bills.
a third bird caught my eye as it swam behind them.
there were 5 wilson's phalaropes in all.

they were just east of the little back river.
