I drove down to Huntington Beach State Park this morning,
arriving about 8:30 a.m. I started at the causeway and then, after
Terry Hamilton arrived and had time to look at the shorebirds and
waders in the salt marsh, we hiked out to the jetty and were on the
way back when rain began to sprinkle. I left about 1:30 p.m. with 36
species of birds, including four that were year birds for me:
purple sandpiper: a dozen or so on the jetty
piping plover: six to eight at the jetty pond
surf scoter
white-winged scoter
Three flocks of scoters flew north off the beach as we were
walking back from the jetty. There were at least two whitewinged in
one flock. I looked specifically for black scoters in all three
flocks but was unable to pick any out.
