Buff-bellied Hummingbird--SC state record

On 4 December I went to Lexington, South Carolina (near Columbia) to
investigate the report of two hummingbirds with reddish orange bills
that were coming to a feeder.

I observed only one bird but was able to capture and band it: the
first Buff-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia yucatanensis) ever reported
for South Carolina. It's exciting--make that exhilarating!--to be
able to add a new species to the state list.

Thanks to Cathleen Lee for reporting the bird and allowing me to band
it, and to Nancy Newfield for her expert advice on ageing and sexing
Buff-bellied Hummingbirds.

I am awaiting word on whether the bird is still visiting the feeder.
If it is, I will post a note to the list later today (5 December)
about travel directions and Cathleen's requests about viewing the
bird. Please do not attempt to contact her or visit until then.
