Hello, this is a December 7 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
SNOWY OWL
GLAUCOUS GULL
NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE
WHITE PELICANS
The SNOWY OWL present on the Fort Fisher spit since 11-24 has not been
reported since 12-3.
A 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL was seen on 11-29 on a small freshwater pond
right by the road in Carolina Beach, NC. Look at the intersection of Lake
Park Blvd. and Atlanta Ave.
Two WHITE PELICANS were seen at Harker's Island in NC on 12-1.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE is being seen in Whispering Pines, NC. Contact
Susan Campbell at <ncaves@utinet.net> for latest details.
A female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD is coming to a feeder near York, SC. Call Bill
Hilton at 803-684-5852 for arrangements to see this bird.
A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was banded near York, SC on 11-27. This species is
virtually never reported from the piedmont or coastal plains of the Carolinas
except by banders; though these small owls probably winter throughout both
states most years. For details call Bill Hilton at 803-684-5852 for details.
Thanks this week to Bill Hilton and Brian Deanhardt for their calls and
reports. Some of this information was gleaned from Carolinabirds.
