Cuddo Unit, Santee NWR, 29 December

Yesterday, while working the interior (away from the lake) portion of the
Cuddo Unit for the Santee CBC, Kathleen O'Grady and I found two of our three
Sedge Wrens in the big sparrow field on the left-hand side of the Wildlife
Drive at the entrance into the Cuddo Unit. These two wrens were quite
cooperative for wrens and we got excellent looks at them. What the sparrow
field lacked, however, was sparrows. We encountered far fewer sparrows than
I am accustomed to finding at Cuddo. The Sedge Wrens were a very nice
bonus, though.

Here at home, the Pine Siskins arrived today. I counted a maximum of four
Pine Siskins at once on the feeders today. Also present were three Purple
Finches. This is supposed to be an "eastern" irruption year for the Pine
Siskins and I hope my numbers of Siskin increase through the winter. I am
already saving my pennies for thistle seed for them.
