Hello, this is a January 7 update of the carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report are :

GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE
AS-THROATED FLYCATCHER
WESTERN KINGBIRDS
BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was discovered near Southport, NC. on 1-5 and relocated
after much effort on 1-6. From Southport take Hwy. 211 towards the Fort
Fisher ferry terminal. When 211 turns right to go to the ferry, STAY
STRAIGHT. Cross a marsh, then RR tracks, then make a right turn at Shepard
Rd. Go about 1/4 mile to a large gypsum mound on the right. Notice a thick
green hedgerow on the right just before the mound. The towhee hangs out with
a large sparrow flock in this area or directly across the road in a patch of
dried, head-high weeds. Birding off the road is not permitted and should not
be necessary to see the bird. Some patience may be.

The ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER at Alligator River NWR was still present as of
1-2. From US 64 enter the refuge on Milltail Rd. Take the first left (Long
Curve Rd.) and continue to Link Rd. on the left. Park and wait for the
flycatcher to appear in the woods on the left of Link Rd. Do not pass through
any off-limits areas.

At least 2 WESTERN KINGBIRDS continue to be seen at Fort Raleigh on Roanoke
Island in NC. Go to the headquaters building and look in the bare deciduous
trees behind the building. The birds may roam widely and could be anywhere in
the trees around the rather large parking area.

The imm. male BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD near Greensboro, NC is still present.
Call Monte Tickle at 336-449-4289 for updates.

Thanks this week to Jeff Lewis, Greg Massey, and Wayne Forsythe for their
calls and reports.
