Hello, this is a February 12 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER
WESTERN KINGBIRD
EURASIAN WIGEON

The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE near Southport, NC is still being seen most reliably
in the early to mid-AM. Earliest sightings occur around 8:00 AM. From
Southport take Hwy. 211 toward the Southport- Fort Fisher ferry terminal.
When 211 turns right to go to the ferry, you stay straight. Continue until
the road ends at a chain link gate. Turn right onto Shepherd St. and go about
1/3 mile to an area of tall dried weeds on the left. Look for a cleared area
within these weeds where birdseed has been spread. Park and watch the area
carefully for the towhee to appear.

The ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER at Alligator River NWR in NC is still present but
is a challenge to see. From US 64 enter the refuge on Milltail Rd. Take the
first left turn (Long Curve Rd. ) and proceed to Link Rd. on the left. Look
for the flycatcher in the woods to the left of Link Rd. Stay on Long Curve
Rd. to search for the bird.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD is also present at Alligator River NWR. Look around the
intersection of Grouse and Bear Rds. at the refuge.

A male EURASIAN WIGEON continues to be seen at Greenfield Lake in wilmington,
NC. Look among the American wigeon there.

Thanks this week to Van Atkins, and Wayne Forsythe for their calls and
reports.
