Carolina Birders:
With Spring migration beginning, birders in the Carolinas might be interested
in brushing up on their identification skills for sandpipers, plovers and
other shorebirds with a video tape that I have watched recently. Some folks
may know about the tape already because it has been on the market since 2000,
but I learned about it just recently from one of the videographers, Greg
Dodge.
The tape describes thirty-eight commonly seen species of "waders" or
shorebirds. There are several scenes in which potentially confusing species,
such as Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, are shown foraging together. The video
makes use of stop-action and Peterson-like pointers to highlight field marks.
Occasionally, still photographs also are used to show plumage comparisons.
The calls for some species are included when they would help with
identification. Where I live in central North Carolina I get few
opportunities to sharpen my shorebird identification skills on real birds, so
having a video like this is helpful.
The Video is called "Shorebirds: A Guide to Shorebirds of Eastern North
America" by Richard K. Walton and Greg Dodge. The video box gives the
following contact information: Brownbag Productions, P.O. Box 61754, Durham,
NC 27715, http://www.brownbag productions.com. I just checked the Fall, 2001
American Birding Association catalog (800-634-7736) and see that it is listed
for about $35.
I should include here the standard disclaimer that I was not asked to post
this message, and I do not benefit from the sales of this video in any way. I
own several Brownbag Productions videos, and I am a member of ABA. However,
other than having met Greg Dodge several times at nature events, I am not
associated with Brownbag Productions nor with the American Birding
Association sales department. I'm posting this because I believe other
Carolina birders might be interested in the video.
