Herons at Cub Creek, Jordan Lake

On Thursday (March 14) I checked the heronry (Great
Blue Herons) at Cub Creek which runs into the northern
part of Jordan Lake. There were 32 active nests (at
least one adult on the nest), and 52 adult herons were
around. On four of the nests the adult heron was
sitting (the rest were standing), so perhaps that is a
sign that there were already some eggs. Last year I
observed that the young are born at different times
rather than around the same date. There were also
many other birds at the swamp (Wood Ducks, Mallards,
American Black Duck, and Green-winged Teal), many
Red-headed Woodpeckers, along with two Pileateds, etc.
But I did not see any spring migrants.
