Hello, this is a March 20 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE
FRANKLIN'S GULL
ICELAND GULL
The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE at Southport , NC is still being seen in the usual
place. From Southport, take Rte. 211 toward the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry
terminal. When 211 turns right to go to the ferry, STAY STRAIGHT. The public
road will end at a chain link gate. Turn right here onto Shepherd Rd. Go 1/4
to a patch of dried weeds on the left. Look for a cleared area where birdseed
has been scattered. Sit and watch this area for the towhee to appear.
Mornings are best.
Coastal birders should check groups of laughing gulls for possible FRANKLIN'S
GULLS now. There have been two reports of this species from the immediate
coast of NC , most recently one was seen 3-14 at Bald-Head Island with
laughing gulls.
A 1st winter ICELAND GULL has been seen following the departing and arriving
ferries at the Cedar Island and Swan Quarter terminals. Sightings at both
locations may be of the same individual.
Thanks this week to Veronica Pantelidis, Greg Massey, and Chuck Hocevar for
their calls and reports.
