I took a day off and took some visiting relatives down to Chimney Rock Park
which is southeast of Asheville on the Blue Ridge escarpment (and one of the
scheduled trips for the spring CBC meeting). This is a great place for
warblers funneling into the mountains and usually gets them a little earlier.
Vanguard warblers included a couple of La Waterthrush, three Black-throated
Green Warblers, and three Black and White Warblers. The bonus bird of the day
was a Peregrine Falcon cruising along the cliffs next to the "chimney." Maybe
they'll nest there again. There were also a couple of Ravens flying over the
cliffs with one carrying nesting material.
Wildflowers were coming out as well - trilium (Little Sweet Betsy),
bloodroot, phacelia, violets, toothwort, etc. Altogether a beautiful day to
play hooky. One of those days you "call in well" because you feel too good to
go to work.
