On the morning of 11 April, I found 2 singing Bachman's
Sparrows at two different sites near FSR 613 in the
Croatan NF, near Havelock NC. (This is the Southwest
Prong Flatwoods Natural Area.) First time I've had
the species in this immediate area. Habitat has improved
in recent years because of more frequent prescribed
burns.
Also had 2 Red-cockaded Woodpeckers copulating at
this site.
One arrival that I had not seen previously this spring
was a Summer Tanager.
A burned over powerline corridor in the area will
have hundreds of flowering spring-flowering goldenrods
(a Carolina endemic) about 1 June.
