Dillon County Birding



Hi Carolinabirders,
Yesterday, Ritch Lilly, Paul Rogers and I birded in Dillon County, SC,
mostly at Little Pee Dee S.P the lake in Lake View and agricultural
areas and cutovers in between Lake View and the state park.  60 species
in total. I reached 100 species in Dillon County, (still the land of no
Black Vultures, at least for me) and Ritch started a Dillon County list.
Today's list is as follows:
Pied-billed Grebe-2
Double-crested Cormorant-1
Great Blue Heron-2
Great Egret-1
Cattle Egret-1 in the island in the center of the lake at the park-a
dead cattle egret nearby
Canada Goose-a small flock
Wood Duck-3
Mallard-a pair in Lake View
Turkey Vulture-a few
Sharp-shinned Hawk-1
Red-shouldered Hawk-1
Red-tailed Hawk-1
Killdeer-2
Mourning Dove-a small number
Belted Kingfisher-at least one
Red-bellied Woodpecker-several
Downy Woodpecker-1
N. Flicker-1
Pileated Woodpecker-2
Great Crested Flycathcer-several heard only
E. Kingbird-3
Tree Swallow-1 or 2
Barn Swallow-some
Blue Jay-common
Am. Crow-several
Fish Crow-a few calling
Carolina Chickadee-some
Tufted Titmouse-some
White-breasted Nuthatch-2 heard only
Brown-headed Nuthatch-1 heard only
Carolina Wren-a few
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher-several
E. Bluebird-many
Hermit Thrush-at least 4 in the park
N. Mockingbird-4
Brown Thrasher-1
Loggerhead Shrike-6 on wires
Eur. Starling-some
White-eyed Vireo-about 4 singing individuals
Yellow-throated Vireo-1 a nice look from the dam at the park
Red-eyed Vireo-1 or 2 singing
N. Parula-at least 5 singing
Yellow-throated Warbler-a good number singing in the park
Pine Warbler-3 singing
Prothonotary Warbler-5 singing along stream bottoms outside the park
Ovenbird-1 singing in the park which we were able to track down and see
Common Yellowthroat-1
Summer Tanager-1 a nice male singing in the park
N. Cardinal-common
Indigo Bunting-1 singing from a hedge row
E. Towhee-several
Chipping Sparrow-many singing
Field Sparrow-a good number some singing
Vesper Sparrow-one or two in a bush near a field of rye grass
Savannah Sparrow-some in fallow field edges
White-throated Sparrow-common in the park especially near the dam
E. Meadowlark-2
Common Grackle-some
Brown-headed Cowbird-several vocalizing in the park
House Sparrow-one near a farm house

Good company and good birding on a mostly cloudy day with light rain off
and on
