Migrants 4-13-02 at Congaree Swamp NM, SC



Migrants and arrivals Saturday, April 13, 2002, Congaree Swamp National
Monument, Richland County, SC: 51 species, highlights follow:

Caspian Tern --(adult breeding plumage) flyover at clearing/parking lot near
entrance gate (species not on park bird list)
Henslow's Sparrow !!-- flushed and observed closely for full five minutes by
three observers experienced with the species, near the service road and low
boardwalk intersection; apparently a grounded migrant out of its usual
habitat. (also not on park list)

Yellow-billed Cuckoo 2 seen, several heard
Hermit Thrushes 5+
Wood Thrush 1-2 singing along entrance road

Red-eyed Vireo 10+
Yellow-throated Vireo 3
White-eyed Vireo 15+

Swainson's Warbler -- two heard, one observed closely at the cedar creek
canoe access
Worm-eating Warbler 3
Louisian Waterthrush 1 heard
Yellow-throated Warbler too many to count
Yellow-rumped Warbler dozens still around
Hooded Warbler 8-10
Prothonotary Warbler 5+, one female gathering nest material
Prairie Warbler 1 heard
N. Parula   omnipresent
Pine Warbler 8+
Common Yellowthroat 4

White-throated Sparrow 15-20
Dark-eyed Junco 2
Swamp Sparrow 3
Savannah Sparrow (just outside park bounds)
Chipping  Sparrow 2 singing
