Re: Black Billed Cuckoo

Bruce,

I have found that the Black-billed Cuckoo, while certainly unusual and never
as common as the Yellow-billed Cuckoo, is one of a few migrant land birds
that are more easily found on the South Carolina coast than up here in
Columbia on the Fall Line.

One thing to remember, however. Do not assume that the "coo-coo-cook" you
hear is a Black-billed Cuckoo. The typical call of the Least Bittern is very
similar. If you hear a cuckoo calling from or near a marsh then make sure it
is not really a Least Bittern. Last Saturday Dennis Forsythe and I heard
several Least Bitterns in the marshes of Donnelly WMA and Bear Island WMA,
in Colleton County, just west of you.
