Scissor-tailed flycatcher

Monroe, NC

Blayne and I have been monitoring the progress of possible nesting of
the scissor-tails since their arrival last month. To date we have seen
no nest in the tower where they nested last year. In addition sightings
of the STs have decreased in frequency. Yesterday AM (around 9:30 AM) I
saw one male ST. I observed him chasing another bird away from the
tower. That evening we saw no STs. This AM (same time) I saw none.

I hope this is a temporary situation, but it may be that they have
chosen a nest site elsewhere. Or it may mean that the first pair is not
the last we shall see. The past two years there were days when we saw no
STs. They seem to range over a very wide area and disappear during the
heat of the day. We will keep everyone posted.
