Hello, this is a June 14 update of the carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
MOURNING WARBLER
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER
BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING -DUCK
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS
A male MOURNING WARBLER has been seen in the same area on Roan Mt where one
was discovered last year. From Carver's Gap take the Appalachian Trail south
1.5 miles to the Grassy Ridge/Appalachian Trail intersect. The bird is a few
yards up the Grassy Ridge Trail.
A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER is apparently on territory near Sparta, NC in
Alleghany County. Contact Harrol Blevins at kestrel@valink.com for details.
A BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK has been seen at Magnolia Gardens near
Charleston, SC. Walk the ricefield dike along the Ashley River to a bend to
the left. Continue to the left about 100m to an opening in the rice field.
The bird has been seen here.
Visiting birders to Charlotte, NC can check out breeding YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT
HERONS. Look for a nest over the road at 601 Ashworth Rd.
