Dear C-Birders,
According to The Nature Conservancy, the following states have the greatest 
species diversity for each subdivision.
mammals: CA (195)
birds: TX (477 breeding birds)
reptiles: TX (149)
amphibians: NC (84)
fish: AL (284)
plants: CA (5,418)
NC came in 9th for total animal species (4,131). SC was 14th (3,701).
NC has had 12 animal extinctions; SC has had 5.
NC came in 11th for plant diversity (2,771). SC was 12th (2,582).
