Christmas Bird Counts

Christmas Bird Counts are a heck of a lot of fun, and the data are used by
ornithologists to learn more about bird distribution and trends. The data
are especially valuable, since some counts go back 100 years. No group of
scientists, no matter how well funded, could possibly collect the mass of
data that we amateurs (plus a few professionals) collect across the United
States and beyond each year during the Christmas Bird Counts. In this age of
human-induced extinctions, global pollution and global warming, the findings
of scientists studying the CBC data are more importnat than ever.

Sitting out the CBC because of you're miffed is like cutting off your nose
to spite your face. Let's rise above this controversy and get out in the
field again this year for the Christmas Bird Count(s), and take a friend
along. It's for the birds and, in the long run, for us, as well.
