Hi all,
Was making tea in the kitchen when I looked out the window and saw a bright
flash of red on our feeders - turned out to be an RHW (just kidding), was a
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, which I've never seen anywhere *near* our yard. The
fellow (or gal) spent the rest of the evening dropping down to feed on some
patio mix under the feeders and digging at a cavity in a tree - I had never
noticed the cavity before, and our yard (suburbia with the token few trees
left by the developer) is *hardly* prime Red-headed habitat, so I thought
this was a wonderful surprise. I'm hoping the fellow (or, again, gal) is
thinking of trying to nest in that cavity...
Best,
-Sandy
PS - also had our first CHIMNEY SWIFTS of the Spring today. First ones I've
noticed, anyway.
