Human eyes seem a bit limited in hue, but the irises of birds can be
just as colorful as their feathers.
The 22-30 April 2003 installment of "This Week at Hilton Pond"
discusses avian eyes and some other vision-related adaptations of
birds that can only be seen up-close. To view the current photo
essay, please visit http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek030422.html.
As always there's a tally of birds banded, as well as a list of
recaptures. Of special interest is an old female Northern Cardinal,
and some Tufted Titmice that indicate the species is having a banner
year for breeding at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History.
For our dragonfly enthusiasts, there's also a photo of a new local
species, the Common Baskettail.
Happy Nature Watching,
BILL
