Folks,
We spent the weekend camping at Lumber River State Park and paddling the
Lumber River. Birds were very abundant and made for pleasant listening from
our wooded campsite (lighting was poor due to overcast skies). We did watch
closely as a Yellow throated Warbler kept returning to its nest next to
where a fisherman was fishing.
Anyway on our way home we ate at Sonic next to Bo Jangles in Lumberton and
was watched some odd behavior while eating. This adult Mockingbird flew out
of a shrub and landed next to a Bo Jangles to go box, perhaps biscuits and
gravy or Bo Berry Biscuits. the mocker proceeded to eat something from the
box and out of the shrub hopped out a large juvenile mocker that begged the
adult for food. The adult proceeded to feed her what she had just gotten
from the box. Three House Finches and a Common Grackle looked on from very
close by.
Oh, also a heads up on a new boardwalk in Fairbluff, NC next to the Lumber
River. The boardwalk has lights and makes for a very nice bird walk and its
handicap accessible. River Bend Outfitters is right next to the boardwalk
in case you'd like to canoe the river as well. Be sure to call them in
advance if you want to be sure to get a canoe. We paddled 6 miles
downstream without seeing anyone on the river. The Spotted Sandpipers alone
made the trip worth while! We found 4 of them perched on limbs over the
water in what looked like a bird sculpture. Several times we passed them
very closely also.
