Lake Wheeler Needs Your Help! Please read this.

Dear Birders

Raleigh, Parks and Recreation is reviewing the boating regulations for Lake
Wheeler. They are considering establishing no-wake periods when boats would
be required to move slowly and not make any significant waves. This would
be very good for birds and other wildlife that make the lake their home. It
would also be good for paddlers, rowers and people like you and I who are
interested in viewing wildlife.

Currently water-skiers and wake boarders are allowed to speed around this
tiny lake at 40 mph anytime the park is open.
This is very disturbing to wildlife and very dangerous for paddlers and
rowers. You should also know that Lake Wheeler is a secondary water supply
for the City of Raleigh and is only 650 acres - just 5% of the size of Falls
or Jordan Lake.

There is organized opposition to the establishment of any no-wake periods.
The water-skiing community would prefer that the current rules (40 mph
anytime) stand and the jet-skiers would love to have the lake opened to them
once again.

That's why I need YOUR help.

Please print out the survey below, fill it out and mail it in.

Unfortunately, Raleigh, Parks and Recreation has a policy of discounting any
electronic feedback (email or online surveys)
so it is essential that you fill out a paper survey and mail it in or drop
it off. It's a short two page survey that will take you about two minutes
to complete.

I am counting on you to help make Lake Wheeler a better place for birds and
birdwatchers.

Thank you VERY much for your help.

Sincerely yours,
John Argentati

P.S. There is also a public meeting next Monday June 9th at 7PM. For
