Hello, this is a September 17 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert
featuring birding news from North and South Carolina, sponsored by the
Carolina Bird Club. Highlights on this report include:
BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD
WESTERN GREBE
SANDHILL CRANE
Three BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were seen 9-16 at the Coddle Creek Reservoir in
Cabarrus county, NC. This reservoir is located on Hwy 73 between Concord and
Davidson, NC. From 73, take Macedonia Church Rd. to the end barricade. Check
the mudflats to the right for good general shorebirding and the Bairds'
specifically. DO NOT STEP OFF THE ROAD OR PAST THE BARRICADE ! YOU WILL BE
TICKETED FOR TRESPASSING. For more information call Danny Swicegood at

A female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD has returned to Hampstead, NC for the fourth
year. Contact the Scotts at <FScott445@aol.com> for details on how to see
this bird.
The WESTERN GREBE at Lake Wallace in Bennettsville, SC continues to be
reported before the passage of Floyd; and may still be present. Look off the
peninsula off SC Rte. 385.
A SANDHILL CRANE has been present near Shelby, NC. Call Joanne Martin at
