Hello, this is an October 3 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

ROSEATE SPOONBILL
WESTERN GREBE
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS
RED CROSSBILLS

A ROSEATE SPOONBILL has been seen at Hilton Head, SC since Sept. 28. The bird
can be best seen at high tide from the deck of the Cracker Barrel Restaurant
on Rte 278 across from Palmetto Dunes Golf club. Look in the trees along the
north bank of the creek.

The WESTERN GREBE at Lake Wallace near Bennettsville, SC continues to be
seen. The best viewing spot is on the peninsula just off rte. 385 along the
lake. The RED-NECKED PHALAROPE seen at the same location has apparently left.

Three reports of CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were received. A single bird was seen
at Hooper Lane in Henderson County, NC on !0-2. From the sod farm on Hooper
Lane, walk through a gate where an orange allied Van lines van is parked.
Look for the sparrow along the ditch on your left or around the large mound
of dirt there.
Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were seen at Fort Fisher in NC 10-1. Look in the
vegetation and along the fence line at the ferry terminal there.
One CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen at the beginning of the Elliot Coues Nature
Trail at Fort Macon at Atlantic Beach, NC on 9-18.

RED CROSSBILLS are currently rather dependable at the Walhalla Fish Hatchery
in Oconee County, SC. Up to 8 birds are seen regularly. Look in the trees
around the trout pools.

Thanks this week to Wayne Forsythe, John Fussell, Ken Knight, and Nan Lloyd.
