Natalie and I were down near Lumberton this week, so we made a quick day trip
to Fort Fisher and Wrightsville Beach. Because the day was mostly made up of
rain :(, we ended up birding just a little. In the morning, we headed down
to Fort Fisher and were able to pish up several Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed
Sparrows. The most interesting find was the number of Merlins. We saw at
least four in the tree tops near the point - all males. I've never seen so
many in one day, much less in such a small area. Back at Wrightsville, we
were treated to Northern Gannets and a couple flocks of Black Scoters in
fairly close to shore. Hopefully the weather will cooperate more next time.
Good birding,
