White-winged Dove; Bodie Island

A single White-winged Dove was found on 11/29/99 on the Bodie Island Lighthouse
Access Road. The bird was noticeably larger and was foraging on the side of the
road in grass. Also noticeable were the white wing edges. As I drove by, the
bird flew a few yards and was breathtaking at such short distance.

As you go down the Bodie Island Lighthouse access road from HWY 12, the bird was
on the south side of the road. I am not sure how far from 12 the bird was but
if you go down the road to the gated maintenance road, back up about 500-1000
feet.

The bird was relocated after 30 minutes away from the area, this time on the
opposite side of the road, perching and flying among the crowns of the pine
trees in the area, in mixed company with Mourning Doves.
