Cooper's hawk at NCSU dairy farm

Thanks to everyone who posted or emailed me encouraging news. I'm really
happy to be able to get confirmation of a tough (for me) id. Prior to
seeing the bird in question, the only positive id I had of a Cooper's hawk
was in New Hampshire during March. That was a beautiful adult bird, not an
immature one. Getting the id on the youngster was like starting from
scratch on a new species.

For those who are wondering how I could confuse a Cooper's and a harrier, I
would plead that while I have a recorded in my log a number of sightings of
harriers, only one of those was an adult male and all were birds in flight.
I've never examined a harrier sitting on a perch. One of these days!
