Howdy!
Joe and I arrived at Pea Ridge Rd. Saturday at 11:30 to find 3 other birders
looking for the Red Crossbills already. Four more birders arrived soon. We
saw a nice mixture of species: Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Brown
Creeper, Eastern Phoebe, Yellow-rumps, Pine Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo,
juncos, bluebirds, Downy and Red-belly Woodpeckers, goldfinches, and
chickadees. Then we noticed a different call note from the ones we had been
hearing. Turned out to be 2 Red Crossbills, John got the good ID before they
flew off again.
Did you see them again????
Wished we had driven down Big Woods Rd, but we didn't. Hopefully the
flycatcher will hang around till this weekend!
We left at 1pm to try to find the Ross' Goose in Winston-Salem. NO LUCK!!
There was only 1 Canada Goose in the field. We drove around roads close by
to see if they were in a different field and couldn't find any geese! Oh
well, it was a treat to see a Sharpie dive after a Mourning Dove in front of
us along the road. The dove escaped by making a sharp turn the opposite way
of the hawk!
We stopped at the Triad Farmer's Market on the way home for the first time.
Also shopped a bit at the Four Seasons Mall Saturday night in Greensboro, so
it wasn't a complete waste of gas. As a birder and environmentalist, I feel
guilty driving around looking for birds sometimes!!
I'm looking forward to CBC in Beaufort, SC next week!!!
Happy birding!
