Wintry birding

A colleague and I got out this morning and walked three ponds and
associated woods. Then we checked two others by car. The kinglets, large
flocks of robins, and cedar waxwings have disappeared. We also noticed
that the holly trees had been stripped of their berries, so I assume that
the berry eaters have moved on to greener pastures.
We did find a flock of bluebirds. We also saw 3 hermit thrushes. In
addition to red-bellied woodpeckers and flickers, we found a red-headed
woodpecker. The sparrow group was represented by white-throated and song
sparrows, juncos, and towhees. We also spotted some meadowlarks, something
that I hadn't expected to find.
All of the ponds were frozen, so there were no waterfowl. I'm hoping
that after the storm comes through tonight we can get back to "normal"
winter weather.
