Went birding today to Hooper Lane with Dot &
Richard Hedrick from Lenoir. Unlike others today, we were successful in
seeing the Lapland Longspurs in the field at the north end of Hooper Lane.
We didn't arrive until 4:00PM, so perhaps that is why we were successful when
others weren't. Upon arrival, the field was full on Meadowlarks, but as
that flock flew away, a flock of Pipits flew in, and among them were the
Longspurs. Got good close looks at them. We also saw two Short-eared
owls, thanks to the help of Marilyn Westphal, who directed us to the best
location. Right on cue, they performed for us flying, posing in the field,
and even coming quite close to our vehicle for great looks. Also saw many
Killdeer, and a Great Blue heron.
