Pretty amazing yard bird!

Hello!

Needless to say, due to the weather, I did not make a hummer banding trip
this morning. However it gave me the opporunity to relax a little and
conduct a day of Project Feederwatch. With the weather as rainy, windy and
cold as they predicted, the bird activity has been constant. Pine Siskins,
Purple Finches, Eastern Bluebirds and even a male Robin (who figured out
how to cling to the pb-suet feeder) have made repeated appearances. The
biggest surprise was the brightly colored, determined-looking duck that
strode up the lawn to get to a short stump near the house covered with
mixed seed: a male Wood Duck! He fed for some time, eying the geese (that
had figured out yet again how to get past the 'goose fence') at the other
low feeder. This is a species we very rarely even *see* on our lake due to
the unfortunate lack of emergent vegetation which is typical of larger
man-made impoundments in the Sandhills.

This bird surely made the day seem a lot less dreary by his visit. I just
hope that he comes back again on a brighter day so that we can get some
photos...
