Hello, this is a Feb. 23 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
GOLDEN EAGLE
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
GLAUCOUS GULL
ICELAND GULL
CALIFORNIA GULL
EARED GREBES
A second imm. GOLDEN EAGLE has been seen over the farm fields at Alligator
River NWR most recently Feb. 19. Check the sky and fields along Milltail
Rd. and Long Curve Rd. at the refuge. Milltail Rd. runs south from US Highway
64 and Long Curve Rd. turns left off of Milltail. At least 2 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS are present at the same location. Be prepared to spend a few hours
looking for a GOLDEN EAGLE here. These birds can range over vast areas.
Interesting birds at Cape Hatteras Point recently include a 1st winter
CALIFORNIA GULL, 1st winter THAYER'S GULL, up to 2 LITTLE GULLS in the surf,
and up to 3 EARED GREBES in the surf around the point. In addition, there are
apparently a number of hybrid gulls present in the area. The number of gulls
at the point can vary greatly from day to day depending on the weather.
Periods of unsettled weather are best for gull watching at the point.
"White-winged" gulls are very rare anywhere in SC. This past week 1st winter
GLAUCOUS and 1-2 first winter ICELAND GULLS were seen at the Horry County, SC
landfill. The landfill is located on Rte. 90 about 3-4 miles north of its
intersection with US 501(Business). The staff is tolerant of birders as long
as birders check in and out of the facility and stay out of the way.
Thanks this week to Harry Legrand, John Fussell, Jo and Grady Goldston,
George Hervey, Jack Peachey, John Wright, Wayne Irvin, and Nan Lloyd for
their calls and reports.
