Hi all,
Just another update on the Ruff at Bodie Island
Lighthouse pond. Brian Patteson and I went up to check it out on
Tuesday about noon and it was observed in the same vicinity (to the left
of the platform). Brian immediately pointed out that it is most definitely
a Ruff, not a Reeve, due to its enormous size. It was hanging around
Lesser Yellowlegs and was much much larger by comparison. A Reeve,
according to Hayman's Shorebirds, might actually be an inch
or so smaller than the Lesser Yellowlegs while a Ruff is much longer.
This apparent non-breeding male Ruff was very stocky and much bulkier,
longer and taller than the yellowlegs around it.
