CHBC meeting 4/24, pelagic species (a change)

Hi, all. If you're within driving distance, please drop in at the next
meeting of the Chapel Hill Bird Club on Monday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m.,
Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill (corner of Willow Drive and 15-501
Bypass). Come early (7:15) for refreshments before the program.

Tropical seabirds will be the topic. (This is a change; see below.) Will
Mackin will show slides of seabirds and talk about his work using GIS to map
their distribution in the Caribbean, where biologists are pooling their
knowledge about the birds to plan conservation strategies. Some species are
in decline from development pressure on the islands. Petrels, boobies,
shearwaters and more -- come learn about them! Will Mackin is a graduate
student working with Dr. Haven Wiley in the UNC-CH biology department.

Haven was to have been our speaker, talking about the mini-breeding bird
surveys he initiated last year in Orange County and this year in Chatham.
Unfortunately, his mother is not well, and he will be out of town next week.
But he did map out the new routes for Chatham County, which are on his
website. If any of you are interested in participating in the new Chatham
Co. survey, please let Marsha_Stephens@unc.edu know. Pick out the route you
want and tell Marsha -- first come, first served! To get an overview of the
survey methods and 1999 results for Orange Co., along with the Chatham Co.
routes, go to Haven Wiley's webpage:

Hope to see you at the April 24 CHBC meeting.
