While vacationing in Charleston, SC,
this weekend, I had the good fortune to
observe the ospreys nesting in the
crow's nest of the USS Yorktown at
Patriot's Point. An adult osprey flew
down, snagged a fish out of the bay
right in front of us, then retreated to
a post on shore for a leisurely meal.
Afterwards, it flew back and forth to
the nest several times, each time
carrying a small fish. Once, when the
wind was right, we could hear the sound
of food-begging coming from the nest.
Unfortunately, there was no way to see
anything of the nest except for the
bottom part (it's built on top of a sort
of metal grill).
Other highlights of the trip included
Prothonotary Warblers at I'on Swamp in
the Francis Marion National Forest.
