All,
On Friday, while on a extraordinarily poor surf fishing trip to Core
Banks, I saw two Wilson's Storm-petrels and three Greater Shearwaters
from the Point at Cape Lookout. There was a strong Southwest wind, and
all the birds were seen over the south side of the point. We fished for
about 1.5 hours at the point; the the shearwaters were traveling
together, while the storm-petrels were separate sightings some time
apart; both species came within about 40 yards of me on the beach. The
shearwaters actually passed over the breakers about 200 yards west of
me at one point.
I also saw several gannets off the beach on the northern part of the
island and two dead common loons on the beach. (There was also a dead
bottle-nosed dolphin on the north side of the Point.) There were several
flocks of red knots, a few black-bellied plovers, and the usual summer
actors on the beach.
I did manage to catch one nice gray trout that won me $50 in our fishing
club's pool!
Take care,
Clyde Sorenson
