Birders,
Today 6-7 I saw the pair of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS south of Monroe, NC in
Union County (NC) and watched the female visit the nest once in the 40
minutes I was there. To anyone attempting to see these birds, I suggest
parking well away from the nest tower ( there is room on up the road around
an old cemetery on the right). The female only visited the nest once and
seemed a bit agitated that my car was parked near the tower. the birds range
over a great distance from the nest so don't get too nervous if you don't see
them immediately. Just scan the surrounding fields, fences and power lines.
Some more detailed directions may be helpful:
From Charlotte take US 74 east to Monroe. Exit at Hwy. 200 South. Stay on 200
South for a few blocks until 200 makes a right turn. STAY STRAIGHT HERE. You
will be on Hwy. 207 (Hayne St.). Stay on 207 through Monroe and a few miles
south of Monroe. Watch for the RIGHT TURN that 207 makes at a blinking light
with a BP station on the left. This Wolf Pond Rd. Take the right turn and go
about 3.5 miles to where large , high tension wires cross over the road.
Almost directly under these wires turn LEFT onto a long gravel road. Pass
several houses on both sides of the road and cross a small creek. Immediately
turn RIGHT onto another gravel road which will take you back under the power
lines. Notice the first tower on the left is very close to the road. This is
the nest tower. There is a blue barn on further up the road that is a good
landmark to let you know you are in the right place . Proceed up the road and
park and begin scanning. The Olsens have very graciously said that birders
are welcome to visit. No need to call.
