Scott Stegenga, the Park naturalist, runs a Summer count on the second
Saturday in june, in this very scenic park, and also a January count. These
are some of the better kept secrets of birding in upstate SC. The mix of
birds isn't great in Summer, though we had several nesting warblers, vireos,
etc. Of greater interest were 1 (2?) adult TREE Swallows over the lake, with
the usual Barn and Rough-wings. This is several weeks later than the latest
date in Post & Gauthreaux for the upstate, which is May 23 (1976). The
earliest Fall date was July 18 (1973). Coupled with the nesting report from
the Traingle area, one has to ask : What's going on?
