FWS Proposes Piping Plover Critical Habitat

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is proposing to designate critical
habitat for the Great Lakes population of the Piping Plover. Both
breeding habitat and wintering habitat areas are proposed. As this
population winters to some extent along the coast of the Carolinas,
certain areas along the coast are being proposed for critical habitat.
Critical habitat for the Great Plains breeding population will be
proposed next year. [The material says nothing about any proposal to
list critical habitat for the Atlantic Coast breeding population, which
nests south to the Carolinas.]

What might designation of critical habitat mean? Read about this further
at the FWS plover website at:
<http://plover.fws.gov> This site has a question and answer feature,
further information on the proposal, and down-loadable maps for each
state.
