I'd be willing to bet that the friendly blue heron in Duke Gardens has
cleaned out the entire population of goldfish in the pond! He is a sight
to behold -- saw him this morning at 7:30 on my way to work...
One of the most heart-stopping sights I have ever seen: hiking the Eno in
very early spring near dusk, startled an unseen great blue heron who was
wading in a small tributary down in a very deep hollow. The heron had no
where to go but up, almost a vertical take-off, with lots of wing power.
Awesome sight, but scared the dickens out of me, too! They are big birds
when their wings unfurl. When I thought back to it, it seemed like a
strange place for it to hang out because it was such a tight space for the
bird.
