I got up this morning intending to hike the Campbell Creek trail
at Raven Rock. The weather convinced me that I probably should stay
closer to my car, so I made a run up into Chatham County to check out
my area for the upcoming fall bird count. There were plenty of small
birds at the NC 42 landing on the Cape Fear River, but the cloud
cover and fog made them nearly impossible to identify. There were
only a few birds at the lower landing on Harris Lake, none of them
interesting. I drove north from NC 42 on Christian Church Road,
checking out dirt roads leading off toward Harris Lake. I went down
one as far as I could, started to get out, and realized that the car
was being attacked by horseflies. I also stopped where the power
transmission lines from the nuclear plant cross Christian Church
Road. I found a few birds and heard many more, most of which I
couldn't identify. The best birds at the Jordan Lake dam were
red-shouldered hawks (saw one, heard several), a pair of blue
grosbeaks, and a r-t hummingbird. On the way home I stopped briefly
at Harris Lake County Park, where I spotted a hairy woodpecker.
Not many birds today but I'm looking forward to September 16.
