Hello, this is a Sept. 28 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
MASKED BOOBY
HUDSONIAN GODWITS
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS
EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES
An adult MASKED BOOBY was first reported 9-19 from the beach at Cape Hatteras
Point. This bird was later seen at this site and further north at Oregon
Inlet on 9-24. There have been no reports since that later date but Outer
Banks birders should check around the beach near the old Coast Guard Station
at Oregon Inlet; Cape Hatteras; or any spot on the beach where birds are
congregating.
Up to 4 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen at Mary's House Pond at Bear Island WMA
in SC on 9-23.
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS have been widely reported this fall migration. 2 birds
were at the spoils area next to the Fort Fisher (NC) ferry terminal on 9-26.
This species was present at Pea Is. NWR on Sept. 21 and Sept. 28.
EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES can be seen in NC on Port Dr. on Topsail Island. This
is an established site for this species but there have been few reports in
the past several years.
Thanks this week to Pat Moore, Susan Campbell, Frank Mantlik, and Bruce
Smithson for their calls and reports.
