Barking woodcock?

Knowing that our woodcock were in full swing with flight displays around 12/15
last year, I wanted to find out how early in the season they will become active.
I've positioned myself near the areas from which they display for the past
couple of nights. Each night decent numbers of woodcock are seen shuttling back
and forth, carrying on with whatever woodcock do. Several of these birds appear
to be making a vocalization I have not heard before. It sounds like a scratchy
dog bark, or a mimic thrush trying to imitate a dog bark. The sound is quite
different from the more common peenting vocalizations.

Anyone ever encountered these sounds?! Wonder what they mean?
