Hello, this is a November 21 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
GREEN- BREASTED MANGO
VERMILLION FLYCATCHER
FULVOUS WHISTLING DUCKS
WHITE-FACED IBIS
ROSS'S GEESE
PARASITIC JAEGER
North Carolina listers got 2 early Christmas presents this week with the
appearance of both a GREEN-BREASTED MANGO, and VERMILION FLYCATCHER in the
State.
An imm. GREEN-BREASTED MANGO is being seen in Concord, NC. The bird was seen
throughout the day today by dozens of delighted and relieved birders who
thought the bird may have disappeared yesterday (11-20) AM. Yet despite near
20 degree temperature readings last night the bird returned to the feeder
early this AM and remained all day , visiting the food source about every 30
min. The host, Lori Turner, has been most gracious in allowing birders to
visit. She would appreciate a call from interested birders so she can arrange
for her dog to be restrained during the day. Call Lori Turner at
704-786-9474. This is the only U.S. record of this species away from Texas
and only about the 8th U.S. record overall.
A male VERMILION FLYCATCHER is being seen in Goldsboro, NC. The bird was seen
throughout the day today (11-21) by many observers. From Goldsboro, take Hwy.
13/117 South to the Cherry Hospital exit. This is Ash St., which turns into
Stevens Mill Rd. in Cherry Hospital. Drive straight through and then between
2 prisons adjoining hospital property. Turn left onto the 1st dirt
road/driveway beyond the prisons. Continue on this road as it forks right and
to a chain-link fence. Follow the fence line around a right curve and you see
a double drive- through gate and a big tree. The bird has been working the
fence in this area.
The FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCKS present at Pea Island NWR (North Pond) were last
reported to this tape on 11-13.
Up to 5 ROSS'S GEESE continue to be seen at Pea I. Look through the Snow
Goose flock between Hwy. 12 and South Pond. Usually the geese are in a large
mudflat right by the road.
A WHITE-FACED IBIS has been present for some weeks at Savannah NWR in SC.
Check the Glossy Ibis that are along the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive to find
the WHITE-FACED IBIS.
A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from shore at Cape Romain NWR in SC on Nov. 18.
Thanks this week to Susan Campbell, Chris Davenport, Cathy Davenport, Glen
Lovelace, Carla Ledford, Keith Camburn, Steve Schultz, Pete Worthington, and
Lex Glover for their calls and reports.
