Here are some tips on finding Swainson's Warbler in the South Carolina
Upstate:
Probably the best place to find Swainson's Warbler in Greenville County is
the Blue Wall Preserve near Landrum, where they are common along the creek
below the dam of the large lake. Go to www.palmettoconservation.org for
directions and more details on the Blue Wall Passage of the Palmetto Trail.
The Blue Wall Preserve is one of the most beautiful spots in South Carolina,
and is very birdy.
Also in Greenville County the Swainson's occurs in the Mountain Bridge
Wilderness, along the Middle Saluda River near the old fish hatchery,
formerly know as Jones Gap State Park. It is tough to see here, and even
tough to hear over the roar of the river.
Swainson's Warbler are also regular along the road up to the top of
Sassafras Mountain, in Pickens County, in thickets along the creeks. This is
an excellent birding area.
They also occur in the Piedmont in Chester County, on the trail to the river
at the public dove area at Wortheys Ferry, in the Sumter National Forest, as
well as at the Broad River Recreation Area in Union County, directly across
the river. This site is also in the Sumter National Forest.
Reply to me for more details if you need them.
